Who did what for democracy, human rights and justice in the Maldives in 2006

DO Editorial Team, 2 January 2007

From a survey conducted by DO, we made a list of who did what to further the cause of democracy, human rights and justice in the Maldives last year. The list names the top 10 traitors, best and worst Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leaders, best and worst MPs in both Peoples Majlis and Special Majlis, best and worst media persons or entities and finally, NGOs and Human Rights Groups who campaigned to further our cause.

Obviously, Golhaabo remains the biggest traitor of the Maldives for the 28th year running. Other figures in the list include those who help maintain the ruthless dictatorship of Golhaabo, such as Chief Torturer Adam Zahir, Thasmeen, Kutti Nasheed, Dr. Janaazaa, and AG Latheefa. MDP member Shihab also made it to the list for abandoning the party's objectives and principles.

MDP's current caretaker President Zaki tops the list with other leading figures such as Chairperson Nasheed (Anni), Meemu Sappey and Reeko Moosa. Mr. Zaki played a crucial role in advancing the party whilst protecting its unity. Furthermore, his diplomatic tenure was instrumental in gaining more international support and recognition for the party. Husnu Al-Suood is also recognised for his continued assistance to the party, mostly in providing legal assistance to the party and its members. Saleem Ali from Huvadhoo played a key role in leading the MDP movement in his Atoll. Ahmed Naseem (Kerafaa), is recognised for his tireless work in the diplomatic arena. He travelled across the world last year, notably to the USA and several EU countries, to further the development of the party and get the attention of international bodies, governments and international media. Young leaders such as Abbas Riza and Zahid are also recognised for their continuous and brave efforts.

The list is topped by Mohamed Shihab for the worst MDP leaders, who over the past year has played a key role is disrupting the progress of the party and obviously does not have what it takes to lead the party's parliamentary group. Aside from shaking Golhaabo's hands, Shihab has upset the membership of the party on numerous occasions, last but not least, voting for the 2007 Budget despite criticising it more than anyone else. Others in the list include, Ibra, former President, who has since left the party despite saying earlier in 2006 that he would be the last to leave the MDP. Other figures such as Shareef and Modee, as well as National Council members Shuaib and Thala Moosa, have done nothing but disrupt the party activities. Kaanal, has abandoned his election pledges and is now more of a DRP agent in the MDP.

Top MPs list is headed by Reeko Moosa, for his outstanding performances in the Peoples Majlis. Other MDP MPs including Afeef, Mariya, Aslam and Shareef who are recognised for their efforts. Ibra, despite being an obstacle to MDP's progress, has argued his cases well in the parliament and submitted several bills last year.

Gayyoom's brother in law Abbas Ibrahim tops the list of worst for trying obstructing the legislative body, in addition to his efforts in hampering the reform efforts as Speaker of the Special Majlis.  Other notable figures like Home Minister Thasmeen, Speaker Ahmed Zahir, Minister Zahiya, and Abdul Rasheed Hussain are listed for defending the brutality of Golhaabo, especially when most of them are appointed by the Dictator himself.

Special Majlis members of the MDP relentless argued and debated in defence of the rights of the people. Most notable of them last year was Meemu Sappey. Other key members who debated well include Dhaalu Riyaz, Ilyas, Husnu Suood and Athif, among others in the list.

Worst in the special Majlis list is headed by Moosa Rameez, for doing nothing but vote against the wishes of the people. Next are Azima, Horafushee Saleem, Gubad, Nasheed, Shafiu and Dhiyaanaa, all of whom do not have a democratic mandate as they are appointed by the dictator.

Shaheeda, the producer and presenter of Minivan Radio tops the list of media for her brave and sustained performance in improving the quality of programs brought by Minivan Radio. Fahala Saeed, serving a life sentence after he was framed by the regime, is one of the bravest journalists, who despite knowing the threats he faced, continued to stick to his principles and wrote in defence of the people as a Minivan journalist. Hoara Iburey, has transformed the Minivan Radio as its political commentator and continues to write to other magazines, such as Adduvas. Zaki (NAZAKI) is recognised for the formal launch of eSandhaanu magazine, which is now one of the hardest hitting weekly magazines in the country. Ahmed Abbas contributed extensively as a cartoonist last year, which has cost him his freedom and is currently in jail, for which he is being recognised. Firshan and Hussain (Sangu) have been key persons in covering MDP events and producing DVDs of these events for the wider public. Dhagandey, from Feydhoo, has been working tirelessly as a photo journalist in Addu and in Male'. Editors and writers of Manas, Sandhaanu and Fiyes have proved to Golhaabo that the press in the Maldives can no longer be oppressed by his regime.

Kutti Nasheed, as head of Information Ministry, continues to actively promote the dictator by the state-owned propaganda machines, TVM and Radio. He failed miserably in bringing any changes to the media and press freedom in the Maldives over the last year, if anything, it has become worse. Haveeru Daily owned by Golhaabo's long-term friend Zahir Hussain also continues to defend the regime and refrains from reporting any material that are critical of the regime and its top goons. Dr. Janaaza, Boh Mundhoodhu and TVM senior staff also play a major role in sustaining this evil dictatorship in the Maldives. They are the worst in the media because they are blatantly lying and deceiving their fellow Maldivians.

Friends of Maldives (UK) tops the list of NGO's and Human Rights Groups who helped further the campaign for democracy and protection of Human Rights in the Maldives. Other groups such as Conservative Human Rights group, Amnesty International and RSF have been noted for their assistance in the campaign.
