 BREAKING NEWS
12 MPs walk out of the Constitutional Assembly in protest : Abbas Ibrahim elected Speaker of the Majlis

Reports are coming that about 12 members of the Special Majlis have walked out from the ongoing Majlis session today after they had a disagreement about the voting procedure to elect the President of the Special Majlis. It is now reported that Abbas Ibrahim as expected has been elected by show of hands. Reformists believe that electing the Speaker should be conducted by a secret ballot. Prior meetings were postponed on 19th July when 23 MPs walked out. 9 Out of these MPs are still in solitary confinement an the rest walked out today, some of whom were released only a day before the 12th October session.

DO readership soars

There were over eight million hits on the Dhivehi Observer website in September according to our site logs. DO was established less than 12 months ago by Chief Editor Ahmed Moosa (Sappe').

Ahmed Didi in critical condition -
Dr Faiz says Didi should be removed from prison

Sandhaanu writer and prisoner Ahmed Didi is in hospital once again with serious heart problems. His medical certificate prepared by Dr Faiz at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital clearly states that Ahmed Didi has 'severe coronary heart disease' affecting three heart vessels.

Dr Faiz makes an unequivocal statement on the certificate: "This patient has to be kept in Male' as he has a strongly positive TMT. He is at high risk of getting a heart attack which may be fatal if prompt expert medical care is not available."

A copy of Didi's medical certificate is available here.

There was a dispute with the NSS guarding Ahmed Didi's hospital bed when they tried to prevent Ahmed communicating with his brother.

The president's daughter Yumna was present at the intensive care unit/operating theatre area. She is employed by the National Council of Linguistic and Historical Research but seems to have time for voluntary NSS duties as well. Like her father, Yumna seems to enjoy watching innocent people die.

Abbas Ibrahim will be elected Speaker of the Constitutional Assembly tomorrow

Reliable sources have confirmed that Gayyoom has ordered all the MPs to elect his brother in law and former cabinet minister Abbas Ibrahim to the powerful post of the Speaker of the Majlis. In a Dhivehi article on DO on 5th October, this matter was discussed in detail. Gayyoom wants to amend the constitution to meet his requirements and he is used to having his way. In an attempt to deter people from gathering near the Majlis House tomorrow, the WebSMS service has been disabled today. It is expected that the service will be completely cut off tomorrow. A full report on Abbas Ibrahim will be posted shortly. Some 9 members of the assembly are in solitary confinement and will not be able to attend the assembly. These are amongst the members who staged a walk-out in the first session held on 19th July 2004. MPs will be frightened to vote against the government candidate tomorrow fearing arrest and torture. This is the only way Gayyoom knows how to run the country. No wonder he is characterised as a brutal dictator.

Hon. Dr. Munavvaru brought to the hospital tonight

Confirmed reports say that Dr. Munavvaru was brought to the IGMH Hospital in Male' this evening. He was brought in at minutes before midnight and was rushed back to jail after just half an hour. It is reported that he is also having trouble breathing and needed some medication and a check-up. Dr. Munavvaru has been in solitary confinement since Black Friday August 13th and will miss the Constitutional Assembly which is due to reconvene tomorrow. People of Maldives are in good spirit and talking openly about how to topple the dictator. Now that the State of Emergency is lifted people will be more comfortable to come out and defend their rights. This is perhaps one of the reasons for rushing Dr. Munavvaru back to the jail cell by speedboat tonight.

Treason charges to ban popular reformers from constitutional majlis

Gayyoom has instructed his bureaucrats to ensure that treason charges are laid promptly against Gasim Ibrahim and other peaceful reformists arrested over the past two months after the NSS began its attack on the population of Male' on 13 August, according to unconfirmed reports.

Gasim Ibrahim became the speaker of the constitutional majlis (special majlis) by default after Gayyoom's candidate Ahmed Zahir accepted the position of speaker of the regular majlis. Ahmed Zahir (one of Gayyoom's 16 unelected appointees to the constitutional majlis) can no longer take the speaker's role in the constitutional majlis.

The constitution states clearly that the normal majlis speaker and the special majlis speaker must be different people. It is likely that Gayyoom will have his disgraced brother Abdullah Hameed elected as special majlis speaker. If Gasim and the other popularly elected reformists are charged before the next special majlis meeting, probably on 12th of this month, Gayyoom can oust them from the meeting.

No new members will be elected for the forseeable future, according to sources, but Gayyoom will continue the meetings and tell the rest of the world they are working on a new constitution. The detainees will be transferred home after they are officially charged with treason. Sources say they will be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Gayyoom and his small band of supporters feel that this is the remedy for all their problems, and Gayyoom intends to stay in power until at least 2020.

 Special announcement

Maldives Culture founder joins Dhivehi Observer as International editor

They live in Canberra, the capital of Australia.

'I am proud to work with Dhivehi Observer,' said O'Shea in an interview with the chief editor this morning. 'Twelve months ago, DO did not exist. Gayyoom undermines the constitution only an hour after repealing the State of Emergency

Male', 10 Oct 2004 - The State of Emergency declared in Maldives two months ago on 13 August 2004 was repealed today at 18:00 hours. An hour after the announcement, the National Security Service commanded by Gayyoom announced during the 7pm radio news that people are prohibited to leave their houses in the capital from 1:30am ? 4:30am and legal action will be taken against anyone who disobeys this order.

According to the constitution of the Maldives, the people are free to assemble. 'Our country is always under a state of emergency. That is the only way dictators can run a country,' said a social scientist working in the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Reminder to Gayyoom

Constitution of the Republic of Maldives
Article 26 - Freedom of Assembly

Persons shall be free to assemble peaceably and in a manner that does not contravene the law.

Prominent pro-democracy activists may be charged with treason tomorrow

Unconfirmed reports say that several pro-democracy activists including the most prominent persons such as Qasim Ibrahim, Ibrahim Hussain Zaki and Dr. Munavvar will be charged tomorrow with treason. It is believed that around 13 reformists will be charged. Gayyoom is yet again twisting the tale and trying to show the world that he respects the rule of law.

Most political analysts believe this is a deliberate attempt to gain international support while Amnesty International and the Red Cross are visiting the Maldives this week.

Furthermore, the American and the German ambassadors were in Maldives last week to press for the lifting of the state of emergency and restoring the rule of law in Maldives.

Mr. Nashid, a lawyer at the Attorney General's office is said to be a major source of the 'treason charges' information being spread in Male'. He is a Gayyoom supporter and looking for a promotion. Nashid has been boasting around the capital about his active involvement in the investigations into Black Friday.

Gayyoom repeals state of emergency effective today 18:00 local time

Male' - A brief announcement from the Home Ministry today said the State of Emergency imposed on 13th August 2004 will be repealed from 18:00 hours today. The announcement further stated that 'threats and dangers' have not completely subsided, and advised the public not to organise gatherings and meetings.  It is believed that international pressure played a major role in lifting the emergency.

Male' - According to relatives and friends, Hon. Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, MP, is critically ill and has been in IGMH Hospital since last night. His family was allowed to meet him briefly today when his condition began to deteriorate rapidly. According to very close relatives, Hon. Zaki is having problems breathing and also is extremely distressed and mentally disturbed.

Hon. Zaki was arrested with other reformists on Black Friday 13th August. He has been in solitary confinement ever since. Hon. Zaki is a Member of the Parliament.

 Hiding the evidence
Gayyoom refuses to allow independent medical check for Buruma Qasim

Hon. Qasim Ibrahim's doctor, Prof. Gstoettner of Frankfurt University in Germany, arranged Doctor Willman to visit Qasim Ibrahim and assess him medical condition.

Dr. Willman went to Maldives on Tuesday 4 October, but Gayyoom refused to allow him to see Qasim.
Dr. Willman is flying back to Germany after a brief meeting with local doctors who were treating Qasim. This meeting took place in the presence of the Gayyoom's NSS police.

Hon. Qasim Ibrahim is a member of the constitutional assembly who has been in solitary confinement since 13th August 2004 for participating in a pro-democracy demonstration.

Thursday 7th October 2004

Hon. Ibrahim Ismail, MP is in a very critical condition
Male' - 8 pm - Hon. Ismail (Ibra) has been diagnosed with a TIA (Trans Ischemic Attack). This is an extremely serious medical condition. Ibra's TIA is directly related to how he was treated at Dhoonidhoo. When you keep a disabled person such as Hon. Ismail in isolation for such a long time, without any exercise or little movement, pieces of fat or blood clots can form and block an artery leading to the brain. A TIA is a warning signal of an impending stroke. When this happens, a part of the brain does not get enough oxygen and the symptoms of a TIA appear. With a TIA, the artery is only blocked a short time. With a stroke, the blockage lasts much longer, causing brain damage and often permanent paralysis. Hon. Ismail fell on the toilet in Dhoonidhoo a number of times, at least 5 times since his solitary confinement. He has been feeling dizzy and is weak and numb on the left side of his body and his family has been told of a blood clot this evening. He has troubling using his left hand. These are symptoms of a TIA and needs serious medical care.

Hon. Ismail's family have requested that he be allowed to travel abroad for treatment. This just goes to show that Gayyoom does not care about the well being of his people. Experts say that an ischemic stroke may be impending. If a stroke is not diagnosed and treated within 3 hours of the symptoms, the chances of survival is extremely slim. Gayyoom must be held responsible for this. Hon. Ismail was admitted to the hospital yesterday and has been in solitary confinement since 13th August.

Re-evaluation of Vilivaru Biyaadhoo Bids expected

Male' - Sunland Shabeer and Athamaa Ibrahim Abdul Latheef was asked to come to Tourism Ministry at 12pm today to sign the contracts for Villavaru and Biyadu Islands. They waited till 3pm only to be told to come back again at 9pm tonight. Sources say that Musthafa Luthfee was asked to hold it by the Presidents Office at the very last minute. They came back tonight and this time they were told that the agreement signing has been cancelled. It is beleived that the government wants to re-evaluate the bids now. Yet again this proves that Musthafaa Luthfee is just another Gayyoom puppet.

Hon. Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) admitted to hospital today
Confirmed reports say that Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra), who has been in detention since 13th August 2004 has been admitted to IGMH hospital today. His condition is said to be stable now and he is undergoing tests. DO reported on concerns about the health of Ibra last week (read the news of 30th September), yet no action was taken until today.

An eye-witness reported that he was taken to police sub-station Odeon in Majeedhee Magu around 12.10 pm local time. "I saw him in the police jeep, he looked very weak. It was heartbreaking to see my elected representative in that condition. I saw him, he had his eyes closed. We followed Ibra and saw him being taken inside the Odeon Police Complex with the aid of people. He was extremely frail and weak."

Ibrahim Ismail is in Room No. 12. Close relatives are waiting for permission to see him. His condition is believed to be critical.

This behaviour by President Gayyoom is inhumane and impossible to accept. These are crimes against humanity committed in broad daylight by a dictator. The world must not ignore these illegal actions.

Latest Update

Male Time 23:55 - It is believed that Ibrahim Ismail had a 'Brain Attack' which is dangerous and life-threatening. Ibra needs regular exercise to ease his blood circulation, according to his family and friends. He was not allowed this exercise after his arrest. His symptoms are sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, and sudden severe headaches with no known cause. A CT scan has been conducted on Ibra.

For details on 'Brain Attack' and its symptoms please visit www.stroke-site.org

Hon. Zaki's personal secretary Ms. Vileena arrested
Confirmed reports say that Ms. Aminath Vileena who worked as a Personal Secretary for Hon. Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, MP has been taken into custody by the Police two days ago. There are no information about the reasons for her arrest. She was working in Aqua Sun, a prominent travel agency in the Maldives. It is also reported that the Chairman and the Managing Director of the company has not returned to the Maldives fearing arrest and detention. Mr. Adam Abdul Gafoor is a member of the General Council of the Maldivian Democratic Party. Hon. Zaki is a former cabinet Minister and Secretary General of South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation - SAARC. Hon. Zaki has been in solitary confinement since his arrest on 13th August 2004, along with hundreds of pro-democracy activists who demonstrated in the capital Male' calling for greater democracy and the resignation of Dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.

Message of Condolence

I am deeply saddened to hear about the untimely death of Mr. Zahid, Vaadheege today.

Zahid maybe most famous for his music but to me, he was a great father, who had a wonderful relationship with his children.

I feel particularly sad because I know how hard this must be for Zahid's children and his loving wife.

Zahid was a man with a big heart. His house was one of the most welcoming houses I have ever been to and I have fond memories of Mr. Zahid and his great sense of humour.

My thoughts are with his wife and children on this very sad day.

May Allah bless him with in eternal peace. Ameen!

Government Staff not paid in full

Addu Atoll - According to sources in Addu Atoll, several government staff were not paid in full last month. People were only paid the basic salary; all other salary increments such as Overtime and salary increases were withheld.

Unpaid staff includes S. Feydhoo School staff as well as Gan Security Guards. Locals are scared to even mention this for fear of being jailed and tortured.

This perhaps explains speculations that large sums from the national reserve have been looted by Gayyoom for his plan to flee the Maldives. As must as 25 million dollars could have been moved out of the country according our sources in Maldives Monetary Authority. DO will conduct a survey and report this matter in details.

Hon. Qasim Ibrahim

Hon. Qasim Ibrahim discharged from the hospital and transferred to solitary confinement
Male' - 12:39 Local Time - Conformed reports say that Hon. Qasim Ibrahim who has been in hospital since 24th September has been transferred to jail today. According to sources in Presidents' Office, Gayyoom personally ordered him to be transferred to jail despite his health situation because Gayyoom is paranoid and feels that people might try to hold a demonstration to oust him.

'State of Emergency' to be repealed this week
According to reliable sources within the top ranks in the government, the 'State of Emergency' which was imposed on 13th August 2004 in an attempt to crackdown on the pro democracy demonstration is to be lifted this week.
Gayyoom is under increasing pressure to show the world that he means 'well'. All the spinning by him and his cronies appears to be going nowhere. The United Nations is now pressuring him to 'calm down' in addition to the pressure from the European Union, according our sources.

Yameen, Abdulla Shahid and Adam Zahir are apparently not very happy about the lifting of the 'State of Emergency' because they are not going to be able to do things behind Gayyoom's back. It now appears that Gayyoom had no powers on 13th August and the whole game was played by Yameen, Shahid and Adam Zahir with the blessings of Fathulla Jameel.
The general public now hate Gayyoom and that is exactly what Yameen wants. People are expected to regroup and start demonstrations as soon as the 'State of Emergency' is lifted. The 12th October Special Majlis session is going to a decisive date.

Yameen tells Maldivians not to read Dhivehi Observer

Yameen is a very obedient brother but not a good leader

Male' - Gayyoom's mighty brother, Abdulla Yameen, the Trade Minister, who lives in Galolhu ward of Male' met with senior people of the area last night and told them that Dhivehi Observer is anti-government and is spreading lies. He then went on to tell them not to read the site.  The site is blocked by Maldivian Government, still people access it because they are fed with lies and propaganda all the time.

Gayyoom's government does not allow any form on criticism to his rule. Rated amongst the most oppressive regimes of the 21st Century, Gayyoom has lost touch with the common man. He lies constantly but his lies are a 'blessing' for the people according to puppets like Yameen.

Time is ever so close to the demise of this regime, the most horrible in the history of Maldives. Gayyoom and his family are just a few weeks away from being thrown out by the people of Maldives. The international community no longer listens to the lies and propaganda of Gayyoom's government.

If Yameen wants to be the President of the Maldives, he should start acting like one, like a people's person, not oppress them and brainwash them. We certainly do not want another Dictator after Gayyoom.

Police raid Paradise Island Resort

Gayyoom security forces raided Paradise Island today. Gayyoom is desperate to charge Qasim with treason according to inside information and they are trying to find anything that may lead to conviction. Many locals believe that Gayyoom will plot a 'scam' and charge him with treason. Guests on these islands apparently now know that the owner of the island is in solitary confinement and furthermore they have also seen the many news articles around the world about the brutal regime of Gayyoom. Police turn up at these resorts in plain clothes and begin searching the whole place without a warrant. State of Emergency declared in Male' and nearby islands.
