Gayyoom's failed attempts to convince the world that "it's simply not true!"

By A. S. I. Moosa (Sappe'),16 November 2005

In early June, we came to know about Gayyoom's so called "sweeping reform" agenda much earlier than most people through our contacts in his office. After assessing the situation, as usual we wrote to some heads of governments whom we have diplomatic relations with and are sympathetic to our cause. In this regard, we thought that it was necessary to alert the international community about his tactics to hold on to power and more so, describe to them details of his dictatorship.

I then wrote in the first incident to H.E. Tony Blair, Prime Minister of Great Britain and to President Bush of the United States of America.
In the letter, dated 5th June 2004, I explained briefly Gayyoom's propaganda and his style of government. As a personal plea, I requested them to take action. I subsequently got replies expressing concern over the situation in the Maldives and the promise that they are closely monitoring the situation. Since then I have written several letters mostly to the Prime Minister of Britain and so far the outcome has been very positive.

However, it appears that my letter was leaked and Gayyoom's then Ambassador to UN, Hussain Shihab attempted to discredit my claims. A draft of that letter has now been leaked which clearly shows how hard Gayyoom tries to mend his name and prove to the international community that he is right and we are all lying.

Do have a review of both letters and judge for yourself, how desperate Gayyoom is and how hard he is trying to mend the relationship with the international community.
