Naifaru Riots - August 2001

Naifaru island in Lhaviyani atoll was the scene of civic unrest and violence in August 2001.

The population was incensed by an attempt to stop reception and sharing of satellite television. At the time, this event went unreported in the Maldivian media, a sure sign of government embarrassment over the handling of the matter. - Maldives Culture
